Many schools are struggling with how to address diversity in the curriculum. Diversity is a complex issue and it is hard enough for adults to understand, much less our children. Where do we start and how do we promote diversity day in and day out? Is a one-hour lecture on the subject sufficient? How do we address all of the different learning styles found in kids? Can we effectively teach visual, aural and tactile learners? Diversity issues crop up every day, the newspapers are full of stories and it is a hot topic. Our society's diversity problems won't be solved in a day, but we can provide the tools to cost effectively start and maintain the process.

We have designed a highly effective multi-sensory approach to explaining diversity issues. Kids will see, taste, and talk about diversity. We have put together 20 lesson plans, covering a wide variety of topics, for all age groups. These lesson plans lead teachers in planning a fun and effective exploration of diversity using everyday curricula. For instance, we have lesson plans that use probability and statistics, history, music, science, etc to introduce and explore diversity. The plans integrate the exploration of diversity with research, writing reports, experimentation, play, etc. As with any subject, repeated exposure in a variety of scenarios is the most effective learning strategy.

How can we bring diversity out of the classroom and reinforce the concepts? We also offer jars of beans for teachers and administrators to place on their desks so the kids see them and know that the staff supports diversity. The jars will promote discussions on diversity and will allow staff members to engage the students in productive dialogue outside of the classroom. Parents that visit the school will see the jars, ask questions, and become involved in this important discussion. Schools can use the beans to open dialogue with parents and the PTA and explain how the parents' prejudices affect the kids. Diversity is a community and society issue; our product engages the community and society in the resolution.
